Arctic summer ice could melt nearly completely by mid-century, study says
The Arctic Ocean could lose nearly all of its summer ice by 2040, says a study
published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters. Research suggests that
Arctic ice will begin retreating rapidly around 2024; by mid-century, far
northern Canada and Greenland may claim the summer's only ice, while the North
Pole will be ocean. A different study, from the National Snow and Ice Data
Center, finds that the Arctic refroze slooowly this fall, with November's
average ice cover the lowest since satellite measurements began in 1979. "It’s
becoming increasingly unlikely that things will be able to turn around," says
researcher Walt Meier, a glass-half-empty sort of chap. While a melting Arctic
sucks for polar bears and Inuit subsistence hunters, The Man may profit from
new shipping lanes, more-accessible oil supplies, commercial fishing grounds,
and tourism. Next week, advisers plan to urge President Bush to get busy
replacing the U.S.'s aging icebreakers. We only wish we were making that up.

Hamburgers to die for at US restaurant
A restaurant in the southwestern US state of Arizona that proudly admits to trying to finish off its customers has introduced a new item on its menu -- the "quadruple bypass burger".
The burger at the "Heart Attack Grill" restaurant is stacked with four beef patties, cheese, onions, tomatoes and fried bacon, and weighs in at only 8,000 calories, more than three times what the human body needs in one day.
Patrons who have no appetite for the "quadruple bypass burger" can opt for the "triple" or "double-bypass".
"It's not good for one's health but it's only a joke," John Basso, who opened the restaurant 10 months ago, told AFP.
Customers who have room for more can also order French fries "fried in pure lard" and can purchase cigarettes off the menu. As a courtesy, the restaurant offers its "best customers" a wheelchair service to their cars by waitresses dressed in slinky nurses' outfits.
The idea, however, has not gone down well with the Arizona State Board of Nursing which has expressed concern that some patrons may confuse the waitresses with real nurses.
To avoid any confusion, Basso has posted a long message on his restaurant website saying that his employees in no way are medical professionals.
He said his ultimate goal is to open a restaurant in France.
"I am dreaming of opening a restaurant in Paris," he said.

Top Ten Reasons to Make Gay Marriage Illegal
01) Being gay is not natural. Real Americans always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, and air conditioning.
02) Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.
03) Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.
04) Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn’t changed at all like many of the principles on which this great country was founded; women are still property, blacks still can’t marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.
05) Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage were allowed; the sanctity of marriages like Britney Spears’ 55-hour just-for-fun marriage would be destroyed.
06) Straight marriages are valid because they produce children. Gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn’t be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren’t full yet, and the world needs more children.
07) Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.
08) Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That’s why we have only one religion in America.
09) Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That’s why we as a society expressly forbid single parents to raise children.
10) Gay marriage will change the foundation of society; we could never adapt to new social norms. Just like we haven’t adapted to cars, the service-sector economy, or longer life spans.

my mood is... is.... way too creative to be here. it is a dreary overcast day here in denver... sitting in my darkend office... only the pale, filtered light seeping through the windows. i do not want to be at work, or right here in this city.
i am also high again... snorting the caffeine straight out of the mug. this is not good for me... it is making me a wee bit of jittery giddery hypery high... but my mind wanders even more... the mental and physical boost of energy coming from more than just the caffeine...
my mind is all dreamily wandery.......
dreaming of icy dark blue waves crashing upon the sand and centuries worn rocks... leaving bits of watery foam sprayed in every crack. trees, tall and short, sheltered behind the rock and sand... the castle wall protecting them from the raging, sieging onslaught of the watery deep. leaves, the color of the most beautiful sunset, flickering in the branches... fallen leaves by the thousands, blowing across the ground, pushed onward by the cool, salty ocean wind... one, the color of firey crimson leaping up against my chest... hugging me tightly, listening to my heartbeat, before leaping away again.
it makes another stop in its travels, as it brushes up against a deer, its coat of smokey greyness, masked slightly by the twisting tendrils of two majestic shrubs behind it... she peers at me... a tender, understanding look in her eyes... the leaf soars high, over her... atop the shrub... hopping from branch tip to branch tip... into the air, and then down again... it lands in a small clearing of grass and rocks.........
the wind in a little puff, pushes it upward... a beautiful, lone wildflower tucked amongst the rocks catches onto a firey edge of the leaf... it holds on... for a long solitary moment. i turn, distracted, as a wave crashes hard onto the rocks.... i look back... the leaf is still there, softly resting in the hands of a woman... she stands among the rocks, where the wildflower made its home.... my gaze follows the leaf, as she gently raises her hands... her hair, the color of the darkest earth, blowing in the wind, partially enshrouding her face... the leaf cupped, i see only her dark eyes, a quiet and mysterious beauty held deep inside, as she brings it to her lips... lightly kissing the leaf... her eyes gazing at me, from over her hands... with a blow of a kiss, she lets go... its wings spread, it flies higher and higher... i catch her looking first at me, then upwards... that look of mystery and wonder. i look up... it is soaring high in the gray sky... flying away ... i return my eyes to where she was... a lone wildflower stands among the rocks... its beauty beaming brightly.......

Canadian troops battle 10 foot Afghan marijuana plants
Canadian troops fighting Taliban militants in Afghanistan have stumbled across an unexpected and potent enemy -- almost impenetrable forests of 10-feet (three meter) high marijuana plants.
General Rick Hillier, chief of the Canadian defense staff, said on Thursday that Taliban fighters were using the forests as cover. In response, the crew of at least one armored car had camouflaged their vehicle with marijuana.
"The challenge is that marijuana plants absorb energy, heat very readily. It's very difficult to penetrate with thermal devices ... and as a result you really have to be careful that the Taliban don't dodge in and out of those marijuana forests," he said in a speech in Ottawa.
"We tried burning them with white phosphorous -- it didn't work. We tried burning them with diesel -- it didn't work. The plants are so full of water right now ... that we simply couldn't burn them," he said.
Even successful incineration had its drawbacks.
"A couple of brown plants on the edges of some of those (forests) did catch on fire. But a section of soldiers that was downwind from that had some ill effects and decided that was probably not the right course of action," Hillier said dryly.
One soldier told him later: "Sir, three years ago before I joined the army, I never thought I'd say 'That damn marijuana'."

All Souls Night
by Loreena McKennitt:
Bonfires dot the rolling hills
Figures dance around and around
To drums that pulse out echoes of darkness
Moving to the pagan sound
Somewhere in a hidden memory
Images float before my eyes
Of fragrant nights of straw and of bonfires
And dancing till the next sunrise
I can see lights in the distance
Trembling in the dark cloak of night
Candles and lanterns are dancing, dancing
A waltz on All Souls Night
Figures of cornstalks bend in the shadows
Held up tall as the flames leap high
The green knight holds the holly bush
To mark where the old year passes by
I can see the lights in the distance
Trembling in the dark cloak of night
Candles and lanterns are dancing, dancing
A waltz on All Souls Night
Standing on the bridge that crosses
The river that goes out to the sea
The wind is full of a thousand voices
They pass by the bridge and me
I can see the lights in the distance
Trembling in the dark cloak of night
Candles and lanterns are dancing, dancing
A waltz on All Souls Night

Demand for organic food skyrockets
The organic sector has been growing at a brisk 15-20 percent a year, compared to overall food sales which grow just 2-4 percent a year, according to an article in the Associated Press. Big chain stores including Safeway and Supervalu are starting their own organic brands, while Wal-Mart has pledged to double its organic offerings. The popularity of organic is good news: more cultivation of organic crops means fewer pesticides in our soil, food, and water, and more options for consumers who care about the health of their families and the planet. But there are also causes for concern. The strong demand for organic could lead to a weakening of the organic standards. Retailers who can't get enough domestic-grown product to satisfy demand could turn to overseas suppliers, whose compliance with U.S. organic regulations is difficult to verify and may be lax.

Season 3 of Battlestar Galactica starts tonight on Sci-Fi Channel! Yay!!! :)
if you have not checked out this series... let me just say, it is probably the single best show on TV. The show has more than just good subject matter (although that helps!), it has good acting, good writing, a nice gritty and motion filming style. Plus the continuing storyline makes it very addictive.
There are other shows that I enjoy watching... but since Farscape or the first 7 seasons of X-Files were on the air, there is no other show on TV that I enjoy, or look forward to more. There are 2 other seasons and the original mini-series that are all available on DVD. It also helps that it is acclaimed by critics and audience alike... so it should be on the air for a good while to come.

i saw the premiere episode of DEXTER on Showtime last night. very cool new show.
Michael C Hall (the younger brother from HBO's Six Feet Under) plays a blood splatter forensic analyst for the Miami police that on his spare time is actually a pretty twisted serial killer himself... killing murderers (in gruesome ways) that have escaped justice.
it is interesting how he gets all turned on, by the sight and very thought of blood! it gets him far more excited then the potential of having sex with his girlfriend (which has been a 6 month long platonic relationship). it is a nice dark show with a touch of twisted humour! very good acting... and well filmed!
so far, i highly recommend! :)

Scientists could generate a black hole as often as every second when the world's most powerful particle accelerator comes online in 2007.
This potential "black hole factory" has raised fears that a stray black hole could devour our planet whole. The Lifeboat Foundation, a nonprofit organization devoted to safeguarding humanity from what it considers threats to our existence, has stated that artificial black holes could "threaten all life on Earth" and so it proposes to set up "self-sustaining colonies elsewhere."
But the chance of planetary annihilation by this means "is totally miniscule," experimental physicist Greg Landsberg at Brown University in Providence, R.I., told LiveScience.

i have not read as much as i nomally like this summer.... i read American Gods several months ago... but since i do not have a more recent book to recommend:
This is a great book. Gaiman has a definite way with words, and storytelling. This is not the best book i ever read, but it is well written, and very memorable... and those are two key factors in deciding which books make it into the upper echelons of my past reading list. This was the first work that i read of his. I never read any of his other novels, nor his Sandman graphic stories (which are held in high regard by nearly everyone that has read them). Since reading American Gods, I got Anansi Boys (at the Denver Public Library book sale), which is a psuedo sort of sequel to Gods. I will most definitely pick up other works of his.

Wholly Tomato! is a very cool little restaurant that serves vegetarian, vegan, wheat-free, and organic meat. Nearly everything on the menu is organic. It considers itself healthy fast food... healthy is very true, as it received the Healthiest Restaurant in Colorado award for having the most items on the menu that are "healthy". I am not sure about fast, as they have a tendency to get really backed up when it gets busy. But I will gladly wait a few extra minutes to have yummy, healthy food.
